The wife and I like to travel. A few years ago we were able to take a PC laptop that she was using for a work project on a week long trip to Colorado. It was great being able to load our pictures, surf the web and email our friends while on vacation. This time however, for the first time ever, the Mac would not reboot. We have babied this machine. We always let it go into sleep mode before we move it around while it is still on. I tried to do a disk repair on the hard drive from the disk for the operating system that you get with the computer as instructed in the manual and that did not work. I now have to get a friend at work who is good with computers to back it up, wipe the hard drive clean & reload the operating system and software. Why I'm having to do this on a 6 month old machine is beyond me. It completely failed the second time we tried to use it for the main purpose it was purchased for. I'm a PC, but I'm also a Mac. A Macbook Air (MBA) to be exact. I'm very much into design so it just made sense. I first considered something like the Dell Adamo, Latitude Z or the HP ENVY13, But the Dells were heavily under-powered processor-wise. The HP was crazy powerful, but heftier than I would have liked. The Latitude's Euro design gave the MBA's design a run for it money, but it starts at over two grand and you'll easily knock on $2500 with the bells and whistles, Yikes! The HP ENVY 13 is very powerful and the only ultra-portable with the i7 processor. But for what I'll be using this for, the mobility and price is more important to me. The Adamo seemed to match the price and features of the Macbook Air best, but finding that the design, feature and price pretty much a draw (I personally thought the MBA had a very small edge on Design), I settled on the MBA because of the fact that I can run Windows 7 as well as Mac OS X(which I also use for different purposes)and the better build quality. I have to say, the unibody design really makes the thing feel as if it was carved from one piece of aluminum. There's minimal flex to speak of. Closed, it just feels so nice in your hands.

The 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor is a lot better than the 1.2 and 1.4 that are available in the Dells; more than enough for my usage. This might have been a bit meek had I not already had an Intel Core 2 Quad Desktop computer at home. This also made HP ENVY pointless.

The screen is more than adequate and much better than a netbook. Since it's so light, it really can go anywhere a netbook can. The nice Keyboard and trackpad was also refreshing.

The Solid State Drive is also nice, but after some usage, I really don't find them all that different from a standard HD, perhaps a bit faster, but not that noticeable. It certainly is cooler and less noisy. Some users have complained about it getting a bit warm, but I'm thinking they've got an HD instead of an SSD.

And now for the few CONs:

No optical drive - since I won't be needing this too often it's not a big deal. I already have an external Blu-Ray Drive that I used to install everything. Once that was done, I can only image using it for an occasion Blu-Ray/DVD movie, but even this will be rare, unless I'm in a hotel room somewhere and bore out of my mind.

Connectivity:
No Ethernet, big deal! It's all about wireless!

Weird Mini Display port - also not a big deal since I don't imaging connecting an external monitor to this much.

Only one USB - This one, I admit, is pretty significant. It was a bit of hassle to swap USB devices a bit, but again, I only use multiple devices a handful of times (mainly a USB DJ Console Mixer and an external USB HD containing the music I want to mix). I got a little griffin USB "Splitter" which was nothing more than a very tiny USB Hub, but it did have some trouble getting enough power to the HD from this one USB port, so I did have to add a USB power cable to the mix (the audio was clipping heavily during mixing and transition). So keep that in mind if you're planning to daisy-chain three hard drives, a soda cooler and a reading light to the USB port- just don't. It works fine with the majority of other (low powered) USB devices.
RAM - Here's the other big CON! While 2GB of RAM will probably be ok for now, but I would have loved having the option of adding more. I have 8GB on my desktop and I actually use it (photo and video editing, media center functions, terminal services, etc.)! While I'm not doing much of that (maybe a little Photoshoping) on this thing, all it takes is that killer application that requires at least 4GB of RAM that I can't use that will drive me nuts!

I have a first generation Macbook Pro from work and I always loved the design of it. This takes things to the next level. I'm primarily a Windows user, and this seems to work a bit more seamlessly with Windows than the Macbook Pro(although with the latest drivers and software updates for bootcamp from apple, it got better). I've been using Windows for more than 15 years and actually have been itching the buy a mac over the last few years but haven't got around to. I came very close to buying the last model, the $1,499 one with larger HD and faster memory. So glad I didn't since this version's base model fits every of my need already and saved me $300!

Back to the machine, I have only had it for a week and I'm in love already! Talk about performance and ease of use. My lovely mac starts up in less than 20 secs and awakes from sleep in ONE SECOND! Also, if any one has any concern about switching over to Mac, it's a no brainer. The control is very intuitive (and pretty :) and you just need to look up short cuts online (if you're a keyboard person like me) and spend a day or two getting used to and you'll be set! The trackpad is also VERY convenient - I still feel like I'm doing some magic with the four finger swipe :)

Some down sides are MS Office and Windows Media Player. I use WMP to play overseas radio and have downloaded Quicktime and Flip4Mac and what not and it's still trivial that I might get it work for 5 min then it'd stop. It has never been a problem on a PC. I'm not complaining about this against Mac but would appreciate an easier solution. I can't rate MS Office yet because I'm using my work laptop to do most of those work but have heard that PowerPoint doesn't work in a Mac as well in as in a PC.

One thing on delivery. I ordered my Mac on 4/14, a day after it became available on Amazon, went through the "ships in 2-4 weeks" phase to "preparing shipment" within a few days. And then on the day of delivery on 4/21, my tracking status on UPS says "shipment is damaged and will not be delivered". It already made all the way through to Washington, DC facility! I was very disappointed and called Amazon, they immediately placed a replacement order for me, upgraded to one-day shipping but by then it was back-ordered again on Amazon with the typical "ships in 2-5 weeks". I had to wait anyways because I needed to use my gift cards, and it finally arrived on 4/29! Screen: 1920x1200 pixel resolution for a 17 inch display. Evenly backlit with LED technology produces a crisp display. For the 17 inch, there is a choice of flat or glossy screen finishes. I chose the flat finish to eliminate the reflections.

Case: Lightweight, aluminum case. Features (such as microphone, camera, ports, on/off button, DVD slot) that should be small are small. Before I settled on the MacBook Pro, I also eyed the HP Envy 15 and Dell Studio XPS 16. While those laptops provided a better array of basic specifications (i.e. processor, hard drive, graphics card, optical drive) at a lower price, I was drawn to the portability and battery life that the MacBook Pro offered even as a "large" laptop. Small nitpicks such as the HP Envy 15 lacking a backlit keyboard and the Dell Studio XPS 16 utilizing a last-gen graphics card also helped sway my decision. (note: I am aware that the Mobility Radeon HD 4670 slightly outperforms the GeForce GT 330M. However, it requires more power and is not used in an 'automatic graphics switching' setup.)

On May 5, 2010, HP officially introduced the Envy 14 (replaces the Envy 13) and 17 models with a mid-to-end-of May release date. Two of the caveats addressed with the new models are the backlit keyboard and the option to turn off the discrete graphics card (though, not automatically).

HARDWARE:
There is no denying the solid design and appealing aesthetics involved with the MacBook Pro's construction. Simply put, the look, feel, and refinement of the laptop's aluminum unibody enclosure is second to none. It is thin, light, and it feels durable/sturdy. The 17-inch LED display delivers crisp pictures and an enjoyable video-viewing experience. Furthermore, the resolution (1920-by-1200) provides great real estate that should be well appreciated by users who require or enjoy organizing multiple windows and applications on the screen simultaneously. Unfortunately, Apple opted not to implement an IPS LED screen for the 2010 hardware refresh. Considering the price, I highly expected the new MacBook Pros to receive the IPS treatment since the iMac line recently incorporated it. The keyboard is top-notch. It is comfortable and it supplies a decent amount of feedback while typing. The multi-touch trackpad is absolutely brilliant. It is a joy to use and its convenient functions streamline the overall experience and laptop's "ease of use". While the three USB 2.0 slots are sufficient (not to mention, really close together), it is disappointing that Apple did not upgrade the hardware to utilize USB 3.0. People speculate that Apple will instead be implementing Intel's 'Light Peak' technology rather than USB 3.0 in the near future. For now, the FireWire 800 port will have to do. The lack of a Blu-Ray optical drive was not too big of a deal for me but I understand it can be an issue for other consumers considering the price of the laptop.

PERFORMANCE:
A majority of other reviews I read centered on the Core i7 processor rather the Core i5. It is safe to say that the Core i5 is more than enough for my needs and, most likely, a majority of other users'. It smoothly and effectively handles multiple applications and activities. I experienced no performance degradation while carrying a video chat, jamming to music, checking e-mail, browsing the web, and chatting online at the same time. Moreover, I encoded video and music files with ease while working with other applications. For users who regularly use processor-intensive applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Aperture 3, the Core i7 would be more suitable. I do not play computer games so I will not discuss the Intel HD graphics or GeForce GT 330M in that respect. All I can say is that it does the job perfectly well when watching high-definition video clips, movies, or Flash-based video. The 500GB hard drive is great for storage but the 5400-rpm specification is underwhelming. I still wonder how a laptop in such a price bracket comes standard with just a 5400-rpm hard drive. I expected at least a hybrid 128GB SSD + 250GB 7200-rpm hard drive setup as "standard". Shame. On a side note, I have always heard of stories about MacBook Pros heating up to temperatures where they are unbearable to use on the lap. I can confirm those stories from using any processor-intensive application or watching high-definition TV episodes online. Ouch.

BATTERY LIFE:
Let's just start with the numbers. I get about 4-6 hours (well, 6 if I'm lucky and very battery conscious) on a daily basis. This involves general tasks such as e-mailing, chatting, music listening, and web browsing with the occasional video viewing. The screen's brightness is usually between 45-60% and the keyboard backlighting is not used. Now, these are commendable numbers by any means concerning the size of the laptop. However, it is an absolute letdown when Apple claims one can squeeze up to 9 hours on a single charge. I even emulated the "test settings" Apple used to achieve those battery life numbers. I barely squeezed out 6 hours with about 4% remaining.

VERDICT:
Great personal laptop with a few subjective issues concerning the purported battery life and price-to-hardware/performance ratios.

OFF-TANGENT RECOMMENDATIONS:
If you decide to purchase an AppleCare Protection Plan to extend your MacBook Pro's warranty/support, look on eBay. You can easily find a legit AppleCare for more than half the price that Apple lists. Pros: Build quality is impeccable. Excellent screen. OS never crashes! Fully integrated bash terminal is great---it provides seamless connectivity to other linux-based systems. Magnetic power cable connection works fantastic. Fewer viruses are written for Macs.

Cons: Mostly about OS X and user interface. Hard to get used for long-time Windows users. Even after getting used to it, it lacks some important features Windows provides by default. File manager (Finder) is poorly designed--moving files around is a big pain. Lack of home/end/insert/delete buttons on the keyboard is a big minus. Clicking the touchpad requires quite a bit of force. Choosing large areas of text via touchpad is not easy (you need to push the hard touchpad and move your finger for pages!). IMO, "minimize all" in Windows works much better than expose.

In principle, one can install Windows on a Mac. However, Mac laptops are designed to work with OS X (e.g. there's no 2nd, 3rd buttons on the touchpad, and no trackball for scrolling, no home/end/insert/delete buttons etc). Running windows on a Mac has its own inconveniences and it's not preferable by design.

I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. I've been shopping for a notebook for quite some time. There really is a lot of junk out there. Having used a Powerbook G4 and the first version of the Macbook Pro, I began to look into purchasing a Windows based notebook for Visual Studio development.

I tried the HP dv7t, a Dell XPS m1530 and a Sony FW390. The Sony was quite nice but Sony support tends to be a bit lacking. Sony also would not guarantee support for the upcoming Windows 7!

I have been in various hi-tech industries for most of my career and I am very fluent with using and developing software on PC/Windows, Linux, and Unix systems. I hadn't even considered owning a MacBook Pro. I was still holding on to the out-dated perception that Apple couldn't make it in the computer industry. Since, at one time, their computers used the under-powered PPC processor from Motorola, I knew they couldn't compete with the seemingly exponential processing power growth curve associated with computers based on Intel processors.

Then about six months ago, I walked into an Apple store. The staff had so much fun showing off and converting me to the MacBook Pro. They were smart; off-the-chart smart.

Apple now builds the coolest hardware and software on the planet: Macbook Pro, i-touch/phone, i-pod, i-pad, i-tunes, OS X, Xcode IDE. Apple recently celebrated their 10 billion i-tunes download milestone and reported their most profitable quarter ever. Their stock growth over the last five years is impressive. The trend is clear; Apple definitely rules this industry now.

So, what makes the MacBook Pro 17 the laptop to own?

Screen: 1920x1200 pixel resolution for a 17 inch display. Evenly backlit with LED technology produces a crisp display. For the 17 inch, there is a choice of flat or glossy screen finishes. I chose the flat finish to eliminate the reflections.

Case: Lightweight, aluminum case. Features (such as microphone, camera, ports, on/off button, DVD slot) that should be small are small. No plastic cases that crack; no creaking lid hinges; no flimsy plastic DVD trays. The manufacturing is first class. It is analogous to being in a luxury car where everything just fits well. The MacBook Pro exudes engineering excellence in its design.

Trackpad: Based on multi-touch technology. Two fingers on trackpad and depress is similar to a right-click. Two-finger swipe is a scroll. Very nice human factors technology throughout.

OS X (Snow Leopard): Stable, no blue screen of death. It is obvious that OS X has its roots from Unix. One of the features, Spaces, allows multiple concurrent workspaces to be used (Ctrl-arrows navigates through the workspaces). OS X also includes software for folder/file encryption (file vault), version control software (CVS), and development (python, perl, php, gcc, bash shell).

Before buying this product, I listened to this and some Samsung systems. Thought this one was 'good'. It has a really thin sound. My Panasonic 50" tv speaker was better sounding than these speakers. My main issue with the system is the poor sound quality.

I've set up plenty of systems previously and and am technically savvy. This system took over 3 hours to set up. The manual is bad. System is just much more difficult to use than I would have expected. I had 3 manuals infront of me to get it figured out: TV, Cable Box, Sony HTIB manual. Each one of them gives their recommendation on how to set up a system with a TV, HTIB and a Cable box. You have to experiment with which wireup configuration you can get to work and how you want things running in sequence or parallel.

If you do buy this system, don't forget you will need to have your own connection cables (to tv, cable box, etc). I was aware of that before buying, so it wasn't an issue or dissapointing for me. It could be frustrating if you open the big box and expect to be enjoying movies etc an hour later...only to find out you need to run out to the store and get cables or order them online.

Others have commented about short rear speaker wires. I think they are ok, considering I have a big room. The sub is the only wire that I found too short.

Ultimately, I returned this Sony product and bought a Yamaha system without a BluRay player. I figure I would spend the same money on better quality system without BluRay and pick up a separate BluRay for $100-$175 later.

I have been using this system for about a year now and have been very pleased. Every once in awhile I still find myself looking in the direction of the speakers thinking a sound was coming from the living and not the speakers.

Having AT&T U-Verse I was concerned that the wireless speakers would interfere with the U-Verse system but this was not the case. Worked perfectly on the default setting. It is very easy to setup for your cable system as well. This system does include a FM antenna wire that works great for me even stuffed behind the receiver. The system does include a microphone that helps automatically calibrate your system based on the size of the room and the seating position. When I moved from an apartment into a new home I forgot to re-calibrate for several months, but once I did there was a clear sound improvement.

Shopped around a lot before purchasing this and couldn't find another system comparable in price or quality with wireless rear speakers. If this is your first system I recommend purchasing The Dark Knight (+ BD Live) [Blu-ray] as your first one! I have a difficult time understanding how anyone could rate this system anything but 4 or 5 stars. Seriously, if they did they must have gotten a lemon. I received this system a couple of weeks ago and waited to set it up till we moved into our new home which we did this morning. My entertainment center was delivered and assembled today so I got it all put together a few hours ago. I have a Mitsubishi WD-60C8 60" DLP. The setup was a piece of cake. The rear speakers come packaged with a ton of speaker wire so you can get them where you need to. I hired an electrician who ran the speaker wire back for me under the carpet and behind the floor boards. I have this system connected to my television, blu-ray player, and Comcast HD DVR all via HDMI. IT is a VERY nice feature that you run all the HDMI cables from your devices (i.e. blu-ray player, dvr, xbox, etc..) to the amplifier/receiver, and then run one HDMI cable from the amp to your tv. The remote has buttons on it that say, "TV, BD, DVD, SAT" and all you do is push one of those buttons and it switches for you. Thus you don't have to constantly hit the tv/video button on your tv remote until you get to the right setting. The receiver/amp does it all for you. It works very nicely. I put in a blu-ray disc of the movie 'UP', sat back, and was just astounded at the sound quality. Honestly, it is excellent. Like previous reviewers, I am no audiophile, (although I do own a headphone amp and some nice Sennheisers) but this system sounds great. I mounted the three front speakers on the top of my entertainment center and used a little double sided tape to secure them. They aren't light, but need a little help staying put. For the money, this thing is a seriously good price. The speakers are so cool and such a great conversation piece. At the moment, I am listening to music through my cable subscription. I was going to wait a bit longer but since there's only one more review so far, here is my first quick and dirty shot at Sony DAV-IS50/B system (look for updates as time passes by):

Considering my enthusiasm for HD video and surround sound and lack thereof for extra low and loud thumps, I decided to replace my Logitech THX Z-2300 2.1 speakers and go for a 5.1 surround sound home theater system that can fit my small condominium and similar budget. With prices of soundbars recently going down significantly I was considering them for quite a while, but decided to go for more surround. However, all the HTIB systems seemed too bulky for me until Sony came up with these and until the price dropped to a far more affordable $300 range. It is worth noting that the size of the subwoofer unit is approximately of a PC minitower, but the remaining components are very small and handy.


Pros:
- Very sophisticated looks (I love this, especially when you fire it up and let your friends feel the power behind the ridiculously small and seemingly toyish speakers)
- Wireless connection for back surround speakers can be bought if you don't want to run wires from front to back (still need wires to the wireless amp unit though)
- Additional DVD player if you want to save your PS3 or expensive Blu-ray system from being used for kiddie DVDs
- FM and AM radio receiver
- TDM-IP50 iPod port was included and works flawlessly with iPhone 3G without the annoying airplane mode message. Besides audio, I was also able to view video on TV after pressing the "OPR MODE" button on the port which hands over full control of your iPod or iPhone to the system and remote. However, on a big screen TV, youtube videos and podcasts look bad at a low resolution. I like the way you can use the very same IR remote to control iPhone iPod application and browse through songs, artists and videos. (Warning, some pictures of DAV-IS50 are showing it with the older TDM-IP1 port, so I'm not entirely sure you're getting this TDM-IP50 port, which by the way has shorter cable than TDM-IP1)
- Due to their small size, the speakers can be very easily mounted onto a wall with provided mounts (wall screws not included, but regular drywall screws from local hardware store did well in my case).
- Very good sound considering their size
- Great fit for small apartments and condominiums
- Seemingly proprietary speaker wire connections to the amp (subwoofer) unit can be released and same can be achieved on the speakers' side: after releasing the back screw and moving a lever switch that holds them in place, wires at speaker come loose and can be released and replaced or reconnected.

Cons:
- No HDMI in port (the only HDMI port is HDMI out, used to connect the DVD box to a TV)
- Only one port of each type (one optical so if you have more systems with optical audio out, you need a switch box. In this case I'm lacking second optical audio in so I could besides my PS3 connect my TV for over the air tuner)
- Programming preset radio stations is cumbersome and far from intuitive (I had to read the manual to do this, which I never do)
- No HD radio
- At $599 the price is too high for a product that's just been discontinued by Sony (I bought mine for $299 at local brick and mortar store when it was on sale). However, Sony often does this with successful products and it will provide you with good sound, but do yourself a favor and buy it on sale for $299 or at least not over $380)
- Works great for movies, but with music you can tell where the lows are coming from, because of higher cutoff point, so more mid-low-range sounds ends up in the subwoofer (sounds coming from the ideal subwoofer cannot be located because the cutoff is at frequency so low that humans can't locate the source).

I was skeptical about the sound that can come out of these little "miserable" pieces of nothing, however, they managed to gain my respect when I put my iPhone in the store model and played 320 kbps MP3 file and got the huge store filled with music. After marrying a woman who, although virtually half my size and weight, rules my world, I'm not surprised that these speakers at their size can be this loud and impressive. They cannot be used as a main system for a block party, but if you're into small and sophisticated like I am, you will love these. Bose does similar things, but at a price far more than twice higher and that's why most audiophiles can't stand them. Sony, however, (again) got my respect. Of course middle and low levels can never be superior to those of fully sized speakers, but they are there and if you close your eyes and forget about their size, you might be surprised with the effect. Highs and high mids are quite impressive and so are upper and mid lows. Unlike most THX movie audiophiles who prefer the always and every-reputable-home-theater-present unnatural abundance of artificially amplified extra low frequencies, I don't have a thing for the extra loud thumps, so I'm very happy with this system and I mostly keep it on "Night" settings which additionally lowers the mixing-enhanced bump and thump. On my PS3, driving cars and crashing in Burnout Paradise gives a full 3D experience and impressive sound effects and I don't dare to play with volume set louder than one half (maybe will someday if I want to test whether the neighbors can be provoked into calling the condominium association board president to throw us out).

Audiophiles won't buy these and neither will I once I move to a house, but they are great for the rest of us when in or around the $300 price range and I'm not one bit sorry I bought them for this condominium (soon to be sold with them). However, I think I'll replace them with HT-IS100 I just ordered (found them on sale at same price $299) because of the lack of HDMI inputs. For the average user who doesn't have too many inputs and just wants to watch a DVD once in a while, these would suffice and actually could be more desirable because they also provide the extra DVD player at approximately the same price... I already have a PS3 and I like my home theater to have more available HDMI inputs.

Bottom line: At $299 these were a steal. If you can get them under $400 with shipping and tax, go for it.

The AudioSystem exceeded my expectations. The clarity of the sound generated is awesome. Bass-wise too I think it is one the best SoundSystems out there. The upconverting capability of a normal DVD is quite appreciable. Normal DVD's too were rendered very well on my 46-inch Sony LCD TV.

Only thing missing for me was number of HDMI inputs. Had there been multiple inputs it would have been one of my best purchases. Still for the price I bought (about $300), it is quite impressive. Since I cannot give a 4.5 out of 5, I chose a rating of 5 for this item.

I bought this baby last week for my new home. As usual i got the issue of S Air. I initially bought a Dynex HDMI from Best Buy for $30. i was using to pair up with that. It did not work.

Here are the most issues that everyone get.
1)I called technical support and they asked me to try with the s-video cable that they sent me. It worked, but not an awesome video not a good audio. So i was not happy

2) i then tried setting the pixel to 480p with HDMI. It worked too, but again picture was not good. So, tech support asked me to get some new wire.

3) Someone suggested saying keep your S Air unit close to main unit and before piaring press the pair button on the back of unit. I did that with my Dynex HDMI cable. It did not work either.

Final Solution :

I went to best buy looking for Triple Shielded cable. I saw a Monster cable(59.99) and Rocket Fish cable (59.99).
Monster cable looks awesome in thickness so bought it and i went home and plugged... HURRAY it worked.....my living room is very big , i kept my 50" Sony Bravia LCD at one corner and i am sitting at other corner may be like 15-20 feet away. And kept the S Air unit on the corner with speakers at either end of my couch. This nice shielded HDMI cable is taking care of it. And picture quality is sooo amazing with these cables.

I bought a AVATAR blue ray at best buy and oh my...it rocks !!!!!!

I did not bother calling tech support for signal booster. So for those of you who spent $1000 buying this product, give a $100 for the cable and belive me you wont regret...

Picture Quality -

Pros - The picture on the samsung c630 looks very good right out of the box. Watching Avatar on Blu-Ray is simply amazing. Playing PS3 on this TV looks equally amazing and with no noticeable input lag. I haven't had chance to switch to HD cable programming yet so can't comment on that but standard cable still looks pretty good on this 40 inch tv, a solid 8/10. Watching standard DVDs through an upconverting 1080p DVD player also look very good. You can see some graininess if you're within 3 feet or so of the TV but any further than that and the picture looks crisp and clear 9/10. Blu-Rays just look phenomenal, no other words to describe it really. 10/10. This TV has plenty of video adjustments to tinker with make the picture suit your taste. I actually turned the contrast and backlighting down a hair on my set because it was a bit too good. The TV will also save your picture settings for each input device.
Cons - One of the main reasons I went with the c630 model was for the 120hz capability. I wasn't really sure how much better the picture quality was with the 120hz over the older 60hz models so I decided I'd be better off safe than sorry. I can say now that the 120hz feature on the newer model LCDs seems more of a gimmick than anything. Within the first few hours of watching my new tv I turned off the 120hz and set it back to 60. This can be done by changing the Auto Motion Plus setting in video options(settings are standard, smooth, clear, custom and off). The 120hz feature does indeed give the picture a clearer almost 3D like appearance, however the soap opera effect caused by it unfortunately makes watching movies very distracting. You feel more like you're watching a live stage show than a film. It's good for watching sports and some other live broadcasts and events but bad for pretty much everything else. Another comment i have about this tv is with the viewing angles. While the picture remains clear even at the widest angles, the colors get a little washed out when viewing from the sides...although not to a huge degree. Overall the picture looks great from all angles but you will probably notice a slight difference in color saturation depending where you're viewing from. Color Reproduction overall on this tv is very good. Colors are accurate, whites look white, blacks look black. If I had to pick a weakpoint however it would be with the grayscale. Some grays may appear fuzzy or grainy if you look very closely. This should be unnoticeable however from normal viewing distance.

Features -

Pros - The Media Play and AllShare features are quite nice. you can plug a flash drive right into your tv and play a variety of video files, mp3s, jpgs with easy to navigate menu's. Playing files from your PC works in the same way. You do have to download a file sharing server app from Samsung (it's called PC Share Manager) for it to work but it's fairly straight forward to set up. You just install the app and choose which files/folders you want the samsung TV to be able to browse on your computer.
Cons - I was unaware of this before purchasing the tv since the product description says you can connect wirelessly to your PC but I have since found out wireless network connection is not built in to this tv. To connect this tv wirelessly to the internet or to your pc, you need a seperate wireless LAN adapter from Samsung which costs about $60 on Amazon. So now I either have to purchase another 25 ft of ethernet cable or cough up 60 bucks for the adapter.
Another problem i have with the Media play feature is it can only handle a limited number of files. I have a 16Gb flash drive with over two thousand mp3s on it but the tv will only read the first 999 of them and the rest cannot be played. Also for playing music or video files there is no shuffle feature. You can sort files a number of ways but Samsung left out a random playback ability.

Sound -

Pros - Sound on the Samsung c630 is decent although not spectacular. It's about what I would expect from built in speakers which there is little room for in many of these newer and thinner LCDs. I haven't seen an LCD tv yet that had amazing sound quality right out of the box. There are plenty of Surround Sound presets and an equalizer to fine tune the audio to your liking.
Cons - To get the true movie theater experience with this tv, unfortunately you'll have to hook it up to an external home theater system. Built in speakers are adequate but certainly don't raise the bar for LCDs. I purchased the Phillips DVD home theater HTS3371D.F7 along with the TV and it sounds spectacular for only $160 extra.

Overall -

For the $800 range the Samsung C630 seems to offer the best picture along with the most features and 120hz capabilities compared to other sets in the same price range. The internet capabilities and media player of the C630 are very handy and this set has easy to navigate menus with plenty of audio/visual settings to tweak. The casing of the TV also looks very sleek and stylish. The 120hz in my opinion seems like a limited use feature and may not be worth the cost over a 60hz set if you're not also looking to get the additional features many of the newer LCDs have as well. Although that and most of the other negative comments I had aren't even knocks on this TV set in particular but issues with LCDs in general. The only true complaint I have with the Samsung C630 is that it requires a seperate adapter to connect wirelessly to the internet which is not what the product description would have you believe. Some of the features I might be nitpicking about aren't even offered on other tvs in this price range. Overall, unless you're willing to invest a couple hundred more to make the jump to the new LED backlit LCDs, this is one of the highest quality TVs you'll find for the price.

Other notes -

The C630's Energy Saving features allow it to automatically adjust screen brightness to fit room lighting. Although it's not as energy efficient as the newer LED tv's, the C630 doesn't seem to be generating too much heat.

The box that the Samsung LN40C630 came in was about half the size as the box the for an LG 37" LCD I had bought my parents the year before. Not much packing in the box besides styrofoam holders on the top and bottom end of the tv.

Recieved the TV one day prior to estimated delivery with the free super saver shipping. Was shipped via Pilot Freight and then transferred to another regional freight service which did not show up in tracking information. I only found out by calling Pilot to try and schedule a delivery time.

This is our 2nd Samsung tv and we are very happy customers. It does everything you expect and nothing you don't. I watched PT109, a 1963 movie, the other night and it was amazing! We added the Sony sound bar system and together, it is great. Watching network tv would be okay with the tv audio, but I would not enjoy music over the tv or movies as much if we were using the tv's sound system. We didn't expect a tv to have great sound, so bottom line is we love everything about it. We thought it to be a very good value considering all the alternatives.

The product was delivered to us by Pilot Services and they did a very good job. They had me inspect the box before opening it, and put the stand together expertly (even looked at the instructions!) They took the packaging away with them and the delivery man was very professional.

It took longer than I expected, and all other pieces of our purchase had arrived prior to the tv getting here. I had read so many reviews saying the tv was delivered in 4 days, etc., I expected a similar experience. I tracked the product through Amazon for a 6 days before it showed that the tv was in transit. When we got a call from Pilot, we accepted the first option for delivery they had available. All told, it was 9 days for us to get the tv.
